Stewardship

Land owners may choose to be the one responsible for protecting the important features of the property through accepted land stewardship and conservation practices.

Land stewardship means managing a property in a manner that protects and enhances the natural values and features on the land through such means as active removal of invasive species, limiting the clearing of vegetation from streambanks and shorelines or replanting of native species. A variety of organizations provide information and support for land stewardship and restoration. Many are listed on our Partners and Links pages.

Programs that offer financial assistance or tax incentives for stewardship projects are:

The Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP) is a voluntary program administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources providing lower property taxes to participating landowners who agree to conserve and actively manage their forests.  For more information about this program, see our Links page for the websites of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ontario Woodlot Association and the Ontario Forestry Association.

Lands identified by the Ministry of Natural Resources as provincially significant are eligible for tax relief under the Conservation Land Tax Incentive Program (CLTIP).  This may include wetlands or areas of natural and scientific interest, habitat which is necessary for the survival of populations of endangered species, and community conservation lands.  For more information about this program, see our Links page for the Ministry of Natural Resources website

Under the Province’s Farmland Taxation Policy, portions of farm properties satisfying eligibility requirements will be identified in the Farmlands Property Class and will be taxed at 25% of the municipal residential/farm tax rate.  For more information about this program, see our Links page for the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs website.

At the Dance Nature Sanctuary, stewardship is managed through consultation with the Sharpe family and with the assistance of community partners such as the Peterborough Field Naturalists.
