Land Strategy
The Conservancy uses the best available science and community knowledge to prioritize opportunities to conserve natural and cultural heritage in the Kawartha bioregion. The organization has developed a list of priority lands and selection criteria to guide decisions regarding conservation projects.
Priority Lands
The Conservancy focuses its conservation and land acquisition efforts on properties that include:
- Large, natural shorelines (lakes, rivers)
- Prairie remnants
- Alvars and limestone features
- Oak Ridges Moraine
- Unique topographical features (e.g. drumlins, eskers, hilltops)
- Large woodlands
- Major corridors (The Land Between, other landscapes and linkages)
- Important cultural sites
Selection Criteria
The Conservancy applies selection criteria to assess the desirability and feasibility of engaging in conservation activities on any potential properties.
Screening includes a series of details under fields of:
- Natural Value
- Landscape Value
- Scientific, Educational and Cultural Value
- External Influences
- Adverse Conditions
