Ecological Gifts Program

The Ecological Gifts Program is a federal income tax incentive program that offers tax incentives to private and corporate landowners. An Ecogift is a donation to a conservation charity like the Conservancy, of land or an interest in land (such as a conservation agreement) that has been certified as "ecologically sensitive" according to specific national and provincial criteria. Generally speaking, ecologically sensitive lands are areas or sites that currently, or could in the future, significantly contribute to the conservation of Canada's biodiversity and environmental heritage.   The value of the gift is certified by Environment Canada.  A donation made through the Ecogifts program provides: a non-refundable tax credit for individuals and a tax deduction for corporate donors; exemption from capital gains; no limit to the dollar amount eligible as a deduction or credit in a tax year (unlike other charitable gifts); any unused portion of the donation to be carried forward for up to five years; related provincial benefits.
