We'll post it on our website. Click here to submit. September 27, 2011: Creating a Legacy for the Common Good. Rev. Bill Phipps will be presenting on “Creating a Legacy for the Common Good”. Rev. Bill Phipps asserts that, “Our economic systems depend upon growing consumption of the Earth, and we have come to a crucial turning point. We need a fundamental cultural change away from growing consumption to respect and conservation in all aspects of living". This year's theme is Peterborough: The Participation City: The History of Sport in Peterborough. Celebrate and enjoy local culture, sites, and tours. Find out more at www.doorsopenpeterborough.ca June 15, 2011: PHS Boat Trip. 8:30am to 3:30pm. Peterborough Historical Society is hosting a fundraiser boat cruise that will showcase a little bit of the history of the Kawarthas. Tickets are available. Click here for the poster. The tour group will board a coach in Peterborough and travel to Bobcaygeon home of the first lock on the Trent Severn waterway and home of Mossom Boyd, Lumber King of the Kawarthas. There will be an opportunity to visit the lock station and tour the Boyd Heritage Museum. The group will enjoy a luxurious cruise and enjoy the scenic trip from Pigeon Lake to Buckhorn. Along the way participants will be served a hot meal and entertained with readings from period accounts of the area. The tour group will then once again board a coach and travel back to Peterborough. June 12, 2011: Heroes and Rails Bicycle Tours begin Sunday, June 12:Join your guide Bruce Fitzpatrick, as we bike Peterborough's historic rail trails to discover some fascinating places and people who have made our City great. $20 per person. Tours run every Sunday throughout June, from 1:00 - 3:00pm. Tour is 2 hours in length at a leisurely pace. Tickets can be reserved by calling 745-4404 or purchased at Titles Bookstore. May 26, 2011: AGM Scheduled For Millbrook Cavan Historical Society. The Special Guest Speaker for the evening is Edith George, an advisor to the Ontario Urban Forest Council. She will be speaking on “Heritage Trees – Preserving our Natural Roots”. The AGM will take place at Centennial Place, 2 Centennial Lane, Millbrook from 7 – 9 pm. May 7 - 8, 2011: Peterborough Jane's Walk 2011. Participate and explore your neighbourhood during Jane's walk days this weekend. Jane’s Walk celebrates the ideas and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting people out exploring their neighbourhoods and meeting their neighbours. Free walking tours held on the first weekend of May each year are led by locals who want to create a space for residents to talk about what matters to them in the places they live and work. Responsible lending refers to how financial institutions factor in environmental and social considerations into the loans and other financial products they provide. Chris Ouellette, Manager, Environmental Solutions, RBC, will discuss how RBC has taken a leadership role in responsible lending by outlining a number of the bank’s related initiatives. March 22, 2011: World Water Day 2011: The Lakeland Alliance is co-hosting a free public event that will showcase the importance of clean water in our daily lives. Janice’s presentation will take place in the Guild Room of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church (entrance off Water St.). This event is open to the public. There is no admission charge. The week beginning with the Family Day long weekend is recognized as Heritage Week in Ontario. Each year the Ontario Heritage Trust chooses a city that has demonstrated leadership in heritage preservation to host the provincial kick-off event for this week. The City of Peterborough will formally launch its first Municipal Cultural Planning project. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Peterborough. Please download official poster for more information. September 25 and 26, 2010: Peterborough Doors Open is being held on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26.
The Doors Open program seeks to celebrate, educate and inform citizens and visitors of the importance of the architectural, cultural and historical sites in Peterborough by allowing visitors free access to properties that are either not usually open to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee. September 12, 2010: Doors Open in Bobcaygeon: The 7th Annual Doors Open, in the City of Kawartha Lakes, took place in historic Bobcaygeon on Sunday, September 12, 2010 from 10:00 am - 4 pm. Suresh helped out as a event greeter at the Lockmaster's Watch House at the Trent-Severn Waterway Lock 32. Lock 32 was the first of the 45 locks built to eventually create a waterway that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. The self guided cultural heritage tour included the Kawartha Settlers Village, Mayburry Bed and Breakfast, Boyd Museum, and Trinity United Church. June 15, 2010: War of 1812 Information request: Dr. Julia Roberts, Assistant Profession and historian at the University of Waterloo, is looking for any information related to the War of 1812. It could be a diary from the time, a shop or tavern keeper's account book, an artifact, a recipe book, a picture, account of troop actions, or First Nations involvement. Please see the PDF of the information request for more details. May 16, 2010: Sheddon Historical Society AGM. Suresh attended the society's AGM at the Lion's Hall in Coboconk. The talk by guest speaker, Dorothy Duncan, on hertiage foods titled "Canadians at Table: Food, Fellowship & Folklore" was quite facinating. Suresh got to sample food made from recipies from the 1800s. It is incredible what early settlers did with so little. Dorothy is an author and international lecturer on Canada's culinary history. |
