1. KHC facilitate the 1999 heritage easement to protect the historic 1870s Captain John Clague paintings. Mike and Joyce Fowler donated the agreement to the Township of North Kawartha. These paintings are located and promoted at the Mt. Julian Hotel on Stoney Lake.
2. KHC facilitated and provided the legal support for the purchase of 456 acres by the Kawartha Field Naturalists (KFN) and the Federation of Ontario Naturalists (FON) north of Four Mile Lake in the City of Kawartha Lakes. This property was an addition to the FON's Altberg Nature
Reserve and now is the largest FON Nature Reserve in Ontario and is complemented by the adjacent Sommerville Tract of City Forest.
3. In June 2002, KHC received its first donation of a conservation
easement on Mieke Schipper's 100 acre farm, south of Bobcaygeon,
City of Kawartha Lakes. The farm is being reforested as part of the
Gamiing Centre and protects 30 acres of provincially significant wetland
on Pigeon Lake.
4. KHC will receive a donation of 110 acres of managed forest on
Chandos Lake, Peterborough County. KHC is helping Dan and Pat
Clunis through the process of severing their property to retain 10 acres
with their house and donate the remaining 110 acres of managed
forest to KHC.
5. KHC has advised the City of Peterborough and Trent University on the use of the federal Ecogifts tax incentives and conservation agreements. Such advice will help secure donations of significant sites, including a City-designated Natural Area.
6. KHC is working with landowners and potential purchasers on a
number of other properties throughout the Kawartha region. KHC is providing its expertise and creative conservation approaches to achieve win-win arrangements.
7. KHC has worked with Trent University and Sir Sandford Fleming
College students to identify important cultural and natural heritage sites around the region. This is part of KHC's larger initiative to use the best available science to identify priority locations for its conservation work.
8. Norman Cowan has donated a conservation agreement to protect
the largest undeveloped island left in Stoney Lake, Douro-Dummer Township. Eastern Syndicate Island is an important stepping stone in Boschink Narrows from the north to south shore.
9. KHC is working with its neighbouring land trust, the Couchiching Conservancy, on identifying and conserving important elements in the shallow limestone and granite transition zone between southern Ontario and the Canadian Shield. Research, collaboration and conservation
are all part of this new project.
